Profile
Guulabaa – Place of the Koala is a unique nature‑based visitor destination located in Cowarra State Forest, just outside Port Macquarie. Its name, “Guulabaa,” comes from the local Gathang language and means “Place of the Koala.” This landmark project is the first in the world to host a wild koala breeding facility, run by Koala Conservation Australia in partnership with conservation organisations. It was developed after the devastating bushfires as a hub for eco‑tourism, wildlife protection, and cultural connection with the Biripi people.
Visitors are welcomed by the striking 2.5‑metre Big Koala sculpture, part of the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail, before exploring The Hub—a network of timber decks that leads to a range of experiences. These include an Aboriginal‑owned café and art gallery, an outdoor learning amphitheatre, and WildNets Adventure Park, Australia’s largest suspended treetop playground. While the breeding yards themselves are not visible to the public to ensure the koalas’ welfare, the site provides opportunities to learn about koala conservation and the important work being done to secure their future.
Guulabaa is more than a tourist attraction—it is a place where culture, conservation, and community come together. A visit here supports vital wildlife initiatives, showcases Indigenous heritage, and offers an inspiring day out for families, nature lovers, and anyone wanting to connect with the Australian bush. Just a short drive from Port Macquarie or Wauchope, it is a must‑visit for those who want to see positive change in action.
