Profile
Nestled along the serene Hastings River at Sandfly Alley, Tunstead Oysters is a charming, family-run oyster farm and seafood eatery. Cultivated through five generations of the Tunstead family, these oysters are a testament to decades of tradition, local knowledge, and hands-on stewardship.
What makes them special?
-
Premium Sydney Rock Oysters: Nurtured in the clean, nutrient-rich estuaries of the Hastings River, they’re known for their plump, creamy texture and subtly briny flavour with a hint of sweetness.
-
Sustainable, family-first farming: Co-managed by David, Peter, and the wider Tunstead clan (including their beloved dog Missy!), the operation balances modern aquaculture methods with environmental care—protecting the river ecosystem while producing top-quality oysters.
Farm & dining experience
During the oyster season, visitors can enjoy freshly shucked oysters directly from the riverside shed. Casual and authentic, it’s the kind of place appreciated for its home-delivered oysters, friendly service, and connection to the local community—including occasional weddings and small events.
Resilience & reputation
The farm has bounced back impressively from devastating floods that swept away infrastructure and oysters in 2021. Yet the Tunsteads’ grit and love for the region shone through—they rebuilt, recovered, and continued to supply fresh oysters to delighted locals and Sydney restaurants.
